North Korea prevents its citizens from accessing any form of independent media. Any citizen who attempts to access foreign broadcasts to seek information from the outside world risks being interned in one of the state’s notorious prison camps. The very few visitors to the country are strictly forbidden to bring into North Korea radios or other communications equipment. As a result, little independent and objective information about the propaganda based mass-media of the country has been gathered or published.
Over successive trips into each province of the country, Behind the Curtain has smuggled monitoring and recording equipment to capture and analyse the propaganda and broadcast media used by the North Korean regime as a prime instrument of control over the population.
Behind the Curtain is an ongoing multimedia project that is divided into multiple downloaded volumes. Our purpose for the project is to gather, examine and present an explanation of the North Korean regime’s propaganda. Behind the Curtain on the iPad and Apple Mac computers offers a immersive full-screen experience of interactive diagrams, photos, audio and video. Multi‑Touch interaction enables you to flick through photo galleries, launch multimedia applets, tap to pop up sidebars, or play video and audio. Navigate through the book by simply sliding a finger along the bottom of the screen. Highlighting text, taking notes, searching for content is just as easy.

The media in North Korea is entirely state-operated and the most strictly controlled in the world. North Koreans are not permitted consumption of uncontrolled information.
Radio and TV sets are pre-tuned and locked onto only government-operated stations which pump out a steady stream of propaganda that predominantly focuses on flattering reports of the North Korean leadership.
The Behind The Curtain project provide a rare and unique opportunity to experience this propaganda media. We analyze the messages and look at the methods and broadcast infrastructure used by the regime to paint the nation as the purest paradise on earth.
The Preview Volume allows select content from the complete project to be sampled in one single download.

Volume One introduces the primary actors, locations, and stories that underpin the myths that form the foundation of the Kim family cult.
Volume Two presents the electronic mass-media used as a prime instrument of control over the population.
Volume Three examines the daily war of words being broadcast from the outside world into North Korea and the methods deployed by the Kim regime to minimize the effectiveness of any message enlightening the North Korean population.
